4 Billion Years On

About Us

Welcome to 4 Billion Years On - a platform tracking the four civilisation-scale shifts of our era: Climate Change, Artificial Intelligence, Renewable Energy, and Biotechnology.

Our aim is to make the most important and complex forces reshaping the world genuinely understandable. That means live data dashboards, plain-English explainers, curated reading lists, and sourced articles. Where we have a view - particularly on AI, where the pace and stakes of change are hard to overstate - we share it, clearly labelled as opinion.

Climate is where we go deepest. Our tracker covers global and regional temperature anomalies across 144 regions - from 6 continents and 78 countries to 50 US states and 17 UK regions - updated monthly. Beyond the numbers, we track the underlying drivers: the ENSO / El Niño cycle with observed Niño 3.4, MEI, SOI indices and a 9-month NOAA and SNU CNN forecast; the North Atlantic Oscillation and Polar Vortex on a daily basis; greenhouse gas levels, sea level rise and Arctic ice extent, and planetary boundaries. Our 4BYO Climate Symphony weaves all of these drivers together into a single compounded view with a live multi-season forecast - including our Temperature Ratchet, which tracks how each El Niño event has lifted the global temperature floor higher than the last - and the 4BYO Climate Helix turns any region's temperature record into a year-on-year spiral that makes long-run warming viscerally clear.

On the energy side we track the global shift to clean power - generation mix by country, rankings, and a detailed UK plug-in solar guide. For AI and biotech we cover investment trends, research output, and the breakthroughs that matter, alongside our own analysis of where things are heading.

Everything is sourced, methodologies are published, and the data updates automatically. If something looks wrong, or you have a suggestion for what we should track next, we would love to hear from you at chris.4billionyearson@gmail.com.
